I'm settings up a file share / torrent / web server box for a project at home. I've currently got Ubuntu server 7.04 running in VPC 2004 with AMP install running torrentflux and phpmyadmin... those work fine

My problem is i've only started looking at this stuff over the last few weeks and have no previous experience to call upon.

When I goto my server as http://192.168.0.3/ i get a list of folders and files - this is what am trying to prevent.

Now i've tried using a .htaccess and i've tried setting various <Directory> sections in apache2.conf... short of putting a index.htm in there am stumped!!

if it makes any difference i've used all the default installs for tha packages so the folder etc are all default. the 'root' folder for my apache is /var/www/ if that helps..

any one suggest anything??

Are you trying to do this to stop people browsing directories, or for security ?

If its the former, a blank index.htm file will stop it, if the later, you need to look into htaccess

cheers for the reply... managed to get it working via webmin

I've used it to manually at a few Directives to prevent all /var/www access but allow torrentflux - works a treat!

A tip now, so you learn.. go ssh on to the box, and see what the webmin did for you, its probably changed the owners of the folders, or permission.

hehe already there mate tongue.gif

it added the <directory /> sections to the right part of the apache2.conf

Turns out I was adding them into a section created for a module of some sort so it only applied to that module am guessing...

I'll get these slowly, tho be be honest this is the easy part. the end goal is to have this whole setting running from a Cobalt Qube 3 system so i've a fair distance to go yet.. expect more questions smile.gif

you can just put a blank index.html in the folder, i prefer that to messing around with htaccess or the apache conf.

Edit, sorry old thread on the first page, didnt check the date.
