I have built rigs for over 5 years now. But I still havent quite mastered overclocking.
My current processor is a E8200. I have a arctic freezer 7 pro cooler and I have current OC'd it to 3ghz from 2.66ghz. Thats on stock voltage with the freq at 379x9. My motherboard is a MSI neo-f My question is what guide lines must I follow when over clocking. Like with voltage and s**t. And how would I OC my current processor more. Same question for RAM. Thanks |

sounds like a plan.
Wouldn't mind it back at 3.6ghz. Although stock voltage at the freq doesn't work properly. |

Turn the volts up slightly. Thats the only trick to learn.
Massage the FSB up slightly, if it boots into windows, run tests (prime95 stable for 24hr is just for e-penis, the real test is can you play your fav games for hours on end). If its unstable, bump the voltage up slightly. rinse and repeat until your happy with the speed, the temps are concerning you, or somethings gone pop. -------------------- ~ Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 ~ Shuttle SP35P2 ~ 8Gb Kingston Ultra Low Profile ~ ATI HD5770 ~ |

1.3v to the cpu, 2.1v to the ram (presuming that is max you can set it and keep the warranty valid) and turn the NB volts up 3-4 notches (sorry not at my PC atm so i can't sey how many volts are going through the NB, all I can remember is it is 3 or 4 options above stock)
9 x 420 should be a good starting point. If it posts you are good to go if not just keep dropping the FSB until it dose. -------------------- |

stick cpu multi so it is NOT 'auto'
disable any auto-OCing features. drop ram multiplier raise fsb test if crash, raise volts by 0.2v steps untill your somewhere close to your desired mhz. other voltages need to be tweaked aswell (related to the increase in fsb mhz increase) volts are of concern, but volts=heat. heat = bad, as you know. once CPU is clocked and stable, you can then work on on tweaking ram mhz & timings. that really is an artform, since a change of 1 timing directly affects ram latency (and thus ram speed) - and it's not as simple as 'the lower the better'. that said, intel's ram architecture relies more on fsb speed rather than timings. -------------------- Gaming PC: Asus P5E x38 | Q6600@ 3.5ghz, 1.375v | Gigabyte 9800gx2 | 4gb OCZ PC6400&PC8500 | raid0 320gb | FuZion & PA120.2 | w7 x64

Ignore them all.
Give it to me, go away for an hour, leave me with 1 crate of Kronenberg and when you come back, it will either be dancing the sweet fandango, or dead and melted. Either will be very amusing. Yes, if you _want_ to watch pdub, your not allowed to say "no" or "stop"...
And you have to agree to the "if pdub breaks it, its _MY_ fault, not his" I would suggest if you even want pdubs help, your gunna need to give him FULL hardware spec's before hand, so he can prepare. I'll happily have a go for ya, i'm looking at being at this lan at the moment, i need to go and book on the site methinks. Work have been told i am not working. Period. Aint happening.
Please provide the details that Sim0n has said, and i'll have a gander into bioses and other such stuff, see what we can do. Shouldnt be too hard to get it back to a certain clock, if it ran at 3.6 with the current hardware before, i dont see any reason why it shouldnt get back up there again. If it dies, its your fault, i wont do anything to it which i think is bad, and i'm not going to push anything beyond a safe envelope. I only do that with my own gear, mainly cos i couldnt care less if it lives or dies. Just OC'd my rig a little. Turned all the auto OC things off.
3.5ghz @ 1.26v. Seems stable so far. It boots atleast. Been reading forums though, apparently someone had a e8200 at over 4ghz on 1.3v. Would like to see this |

Dram feq at 434.9 mhz though >_<.
Its DDR2 PC6200. Does the ram freq drop when you OC your CPU? Or have I got it totally wrong |

No, 434.9mhz will be running the ram at 870mhz
When you increase the FSB it increases the ram speed, to bring it back within spec you have to use a memory divider (ie telling your motherboard the memory is slower than it is) This post has been edited by SBB: Jun 24 2009, 09:28 PM -------------------- i7 920@3.6 // 6GB G.Skill DDR3 1333 // Gigabyte X58-UD3R // GTX280@690/1400/1150
